I have been thinking of starting a blog for quite some time now. So, I decided my first post would be about something dear to my heart: Portguese Water Dogs. With the addition of Bo to the Obama family, this breed has become quite popular lately. Portuguese Water Dogs are originally from the Portuguese region of the Algarve and were originally taught to herd fish into fishermen's nets, to retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and to act as couriers from ship to ship, or ship to shore. Often called Porties or PWDs, these dogs are friendly and people-oriented and like to be with their "crewmates."
The late Senator Ted Kennedy suggested a PWD as the perfect choice for a first dog for the Obama family. He said, "They're loyal, smart, loving and they became a real part of the family. And if they're lucky, they'll find a really smart dog like mine who can even write a book. My dog Splash wrote 'My Senator and Me: A Dog's Eye View of Washington, DC."
Senator Kennedy knew quite a lot about Porties. He had three of his own: Sunny, Splash and Cappy.
Let me introduce you to Franklin, our very own PWD. He is the family comedian, enjoys sleeping in Monday through Friday and waking up early on the weekends and assisting with samples in the kitchen.
